— Anos to Arcana |
The Promise Made in a Dream (夢で交わした約束 Yume De Kawashita Yakusoku?) is the twenty-third episode of The Misfit of Demon King Academy II anime series.
Synopsis[]
Ceris, commander of the Phantom Knights who claims to be Anos' father, says that Militia gave Anos false memories. After Ceris leaves, Arcana, unable to recover her memories of Anos, falls into a dream once again. In her memory of 2,000 years ago, Arcana hears a secret about herself from Ceris. Anos reincarnates Arcana to protect her, but his wish for her at the time was….
Summary[]
Ceris claims that Militia erased Anos' memories of him and created fake ones instead, and that's why he never tried reaching out to Anos before. He then readies a powerful spell to destroy Liebarschend but cancels it midway, as the God of Traces has escaped with Arcana's help. As a result, Ceris and his allies leave. When Anos asks Arcana if she managed to recover her memories, she replies that she didn't.
Back at the castle, Anos and his friends talk about Ceris and the possibility that he might be lying. Anos asks Misha if she looked at his soul, so she replies that Ceris is an empty person of no substance. When they go to sleep, Arcana confesses that she must have looked away, as she was scared that her present self would disappear. That's why she couldn't find her memories even with Liebarschend's help. However, Anos reassures her that it wasn't on purpose. If she willingly abandoned her name, it would be understandable why she doesn't want to remember it. The two then go to sleep, and the child Arcana is seen again.
She meets with Ceris and asks him to teach her magic that will take down dragons as he promised. As a result, Ceris brings her to the Divine Pyre, which is said to give people immense power if they can withstand the divine flames. He gives Arcana a charm and then teaches her a spell. However, the charm turns out to be a Pledge Jewel, and their spell summons a golden dragon from it. Ceris explains that Arcana is a Dragon Core, a being that reincarnates in a dragon's womb after being devoured, becoming a Dragonborn. That's why the dragons were chasing her, not Anos, who lied to protect her. The dragons will stop chasing her once she reincarnates, granting Arcana her wish, but she is very scared, as the process would be painful. However, Ceris tells her to think of it as a rehearsal for when he throws her in the Divine Pyre.
In her final moments, Arcana asks for her brother to save her, but the dragon devours her whole. An angry Anos then appears and shoots Jio Graze at Ceris, who blocks it with his barrier. Anos fires another Jio Graze to push Ceris into the Divine Pyre, but the man resists. However, Anos gets him close enough for the golden dragon to fling Ceris up in the air and fires one last Jio Graze to send him into the Divine Pyre. Ceris accepts his defeat and disappears, allowing Anos to retrieve Arcana's source from the dragon and heal her.
Anos knew she would do something foolish because she left a letter saying that she would give him the present that he wanted the most. If she became strong enough to defeat the dragons on her own, then Anos could finally study magic without having to worry about her. But in the end, she was tricked. Anos can't save her, as the dragon has modified her source, so he tries reincarnation magic on her. Even if she might lose her memories, he wants her to remember that she is his one and only little sister, as the time they spent together was real. After Arcana disappears, Anos vows to become strong enough to never lose her again.
When they wake up, Anos asks Arcana if she reincarnated as a god after that, but she replies that a demon can never reincarnate into a god. Anos remarks that there could be exceptions, but they don't have concrete answers. Suddenly, Ceris' voice broadcasts to everyone, asking Anos if he wants the memories he forgot. Anos' group meets with Ceris and learns that his objective is Liebarschend, the guardian god of Underground World, who plans to invade the surface. Since they are both demons, he wants to team up with Anos to destroy Giordal and lure out the God of Traces. However, Anos can't believe someone weak like him, who can't protect his homeland without killing innocent people, is his father.
Ceris then sees the twins and recognizes them as the Goddess of Absurdity, Genedonov, who has reincarnated. He explains that Genedonov won the first Judgement Selection and brought back the Pledge Jewels for the people. However, she betrayed Giordal and brought half of the rings to Agatha, starting a war between the two nations. However, Genedonov eventually turned against Agatha and even the gods themselves before founding Gadeciola, a country of heretics. And even then, she betrayed them. Ceris warns Anos that Genedonov will inevitably betray him, but Anos doesn't believe him.
Anos eventually asks him about what he did to Arcana, but Ceris questions the validity of his memories. The Divine Pyre has always been inside Everastanzetta, in the Underground World, which came about after his death. This means that either Ceris is lying, or his memories are wrong, which Ceris claims is the work of Militia. Songfire is then shot up in the sky, but the impact is absorbed by Midhaze's barrier.
Ceris uses the draconids' attack to justify working together, but Anos rejects him again, so he leaves. Aisha attempts to find the casters, but the Song of the Divine Dragon has become louder, making it hard to use Gatom and Magic Eyes. Anos eventually finds the draconids and destroys them, but there are other battalions left, so the group splits up. Arcana asks him if he's sure about leaving the fate of his country in her hands, but Anos reassures her that there's no one more fit for this task than her.

Adaptation Notes[]
Differences from the light novel:
- Ceris leaves without putting up a fight. In the novel, Shin and Eldmed stay behind to watch over Ceris and his allies while Anos and his friend go stop Giordal's attack. Eldmed defeats Aeges, while Shin fights Ceris but can't defeat him. In the end, Eldmed traps everyone inside Eugo La Raviaz's divine domain and forces Ceris to sign a contract giving up, as he can use the Keeper of Time's abilities to delay him long enough for Anos to solve the current crisis either way.
