With a Pinch of Courage (ちっぽけな勇気を合わせながら, Chippokenayūki o Awasenagara^?) is the sixteenth episode of The Misfit of Demon King Academy II anime series.

Synopsis

Emilia and her students take on the dragon-slaying and binding spell called "De Jelias." However, Emilia and her students failed because they couldn't cooperate with Laos and others. It was then that she caught a glimpse of their helplessness…. Meanwhile, Lay who was invited as a hero, has an audience with Lysius, King of Gairadite. He is asked to save the ailing royal family. But as he is shown around, what he encounters is…!

Summary

Anos' team secretly surveils the royal palace when they suddenly hear a dragon cry, confirming their suspicions. As a result, Lay decides to accept the king's invitation to the ceremony.

During class, Erdomaid DittiJohn teaches the Hero Academy's students about De Jelias, a barrier spell that humans used in the past to slay dragons. He asks Emilia to demonstrate, but she has trouble using Asc, so Erdomaid reminds her that she was reincarnated and now has human blood. She manages to gather her students' thoughts, but Laos, Heine, and Laos' inappropriate remarks about her looks cause the spell to break, and they start to argue. Zamira appears and belittles the class as usual, mocking them for learning how to run away from dragons. Laos stands up, but he is detained by soldiers. Zamira then approaches Lay and Misa to escort them to the palace.

After they leave, Laos takes out his frustration on the door and knocks down Emilia when she tries to stop him. Because they are still connected through Asc, she hears Laos' thoughts about the futility of their actions, as they will never be acknowledged as heroes. However, Emilia slaps him and tells him that if he has nothing to protect, then he should leave. This causes Laos and all of the Hero Academy's students to leave.

At the palace, King Lysius Engelo Gairadite introduces himself and thanks Lay for coming. However, he needs the hero's help as the 26 members of the royal family fell ill, and only Evansmana can sever their fate. The King also thanks Zamira, but when he orders him to continue working hard at the Hero Academy, Zamira shows his dissatisfaction.

Back at the academy, Anoshu gives Emilia the Bell of Thoughts to help her reconcile with her students. She says that she can't, as she isn't the type of teacher who can deal with her students' feelings, but Anoshu disagrees. She wanted to uphold their dignity, as she didn't want them to protect the people they didn't want to protect. Even though no one will see it that way, Anoshu says that he will, causing her to cry.

Beneath the palace, Lysius shows Lay and Misa the coffins where the royal family is being kept, but the Royal Dragon suddenly appears and binds the couple with its mucus. The King has gone mad and believes he can bring salvation to its people by feeding them to dragons. He had received a divine decree to offer the Hero to the Almighty Equis in exchange for royal authority and eternal life. Lysius then summons his pact god, Enus Ne Mes, to control Misa and force Lay into drawing Evansmana. However, she is able to resist it.

Not long afterward, a red variant dragon attacks the Hero Academy. The hero trio tries to hold their ground, but Emilia distracts the dragon with Gresde so they can escape. However, the trio can't run away due to wanting to become real heroes and even contemplate using self-destruction magic, causing Emilia to shoot at them to keep them away. As she leads the beast away, Emilia looks back to the time she was royal and thinks how the three are similar to her, as they clung to a false sense of glory and superiority. She wishes for them to find their way again and accepts her fate as the dragon devours her. However, Laos, Heine, and Ledriano stop the dragon from biting down on her, as they will never have a teacher who cares for them as she does.

Because they are busy holding the dragon, they tell Emilia to use De Jelias while the rest of the Hero Academy's students channel their feelings with Asc. They promise to take classes seriously if they survive, so Emilia becomes motivated and slips down inside the dragon, using De Jelias to bind its organs and crush them. Afterward, the heroes rescue her from inside the dragon, and they hug tenderly.
