A Source (根源 Kongen?) is the fundamental concept that forms one's existence, hidden within every living being. Skilled magic users can store their memories in their source and reincarnate with knowledge of their past life. Even when no physical body remains, resurrection is still possible as long as the source is unharmed.[1]
Overview[]
The magic power that people use is generated from their sources, which reside deep within their bodies, beyond their souls and spirits. It's what makes people who they are.[2] Because of this, it's difficult to interact with the source except with spells such as Vebzud,[3] or see them without using Magic Eyes.
Because the source and the body are deeply connected, a lost body can be restored with Ingall, as the source remembers the shape of the body. Likewise, a source can't live for long without a body. While it's possible to put a source into a foreign body, it won't move properly in most cases. Roncruz Zeybat managed to freely control Noah's body for a time, but he consumed a lot of magic while his source was slowly dying, as it didn't belong there. This change was irreversible, as being apart from his body caused his source to forget the shape of his original body.[4]
Anos' source releases immense magic power.
Like how a flame burns the brightest right before it goes out, the source releases the most magic when it's about to die. This power increase will allow them to overcome their destruction and save themselves. The more danger they faced, the greater their power will become. It was the lack of conflict that had weakened demonkind in the Magical Era, as dying without death was crucial to increasing one's power.[5]
Components[]
The source consists of three abstract parts: a heart, a body, and magic power.[6]
- Heart (soul with no body): The thoughts and feelings of a person.[7] In other words, their consciousness.
- Body (vessel with no magic): The source itself and the information it contains, such as the person's appearance and any existing conditions, like illnesses.[8]
- Magic Power (doll with no heart): The supernatural energy that allows people to use magic, and magical beings to exist.
Trivia[]
- The Eleonore spell can also create artificial sources with only one or two of the aforementioned factors, which is done when the user does not wish to create sentient life.[6]
