SPOILER ALERT:This page contains unmarked spoilers from the light novel/web novel. Read at your own discretion.

This world is filled with order; the lives of the people are filled with impossibilities. But their eyes cannot see the future, so they see hope instead. That hope keeps them alive. In Naphta's eyes, the people are as good as blind. But there is something that only the blind can see, and that is hope. Something I could never see, even with my eyes closed.
— Naphta to Diedrich Kreizen Agatha in "Desired Future"

Naphta (ナフタ Nafuta?) is the Goddess of the Future.

Appearance[]

Naphta is a beautiful woman with both of her eyes closed and indigo-blue hair that reaches her shoulders. She wears aqua robes and holds a clear crystal ball in her hands.

Personality[]

Naphta has a stoic personality that makes it difficult to determine her true feelings. She keeps herself isolated as she thinks she'll simply bother those around her, but she's actually kind deep inside.

History[]

Naphta has a long history with the Kingdom of Agatha and its Sword Emperors. Roughly two thousand years ago, the first Sword Emperor made a pact with her and prophesied that the end of the Selection Trial would lead to the end of the world. Naphta herself would forget the contents of the prophecy, as she cannot see the past and instantly forgets the present. And as time passes, that future will no longer be visible to her due to becoming closer in time to her present.[1]

While half of the Sword Emperors chose not to make a pact with Naphta, the other half chose to remove the Divine Eyes she bestowed them, as they wanted a future that had hope rather than the one she could show them.[2]

Synopsis[]

Jiordal, Kingdom of the Divine Dragon Arc[]

Naphta accompanies Diedrich Kreizen Agatha to Jiordal for an audience with Pope Golroana. However, because Golroana will only hear one person, Diedrich holds a match with Anos to determine who will meet with the Pope. They decide to fight each other's Selection God and see how long they can last, so Naphta ends up fighting Anos. During the battle, she uses Kandaquizorte to restrict the future to one where its spear form will never miss Anos, impaling him. This causes Anos to release the Demon King's Blood, which completely corrodes the spear, but its fragments reappear and trap him inside Naphta's Restricted World.

However, Anos unleashes the doomsday spell Egil Grone Angdroa, and advises her to open her Divine Eyes to see all the possible futures and restrict it, or the real world will perish alongside her divine domain. Naphta successfully restricts the future, but such a future is also one in which she dies, so her body begins to crumble. However, Anos spares her by using his Mauve Magic Eyes to stop the order of the future, preventing that future from coming to fruition.

Agatha Prophecy Arc[]

During the banquet for Anos' visit, Naphta decides to stay away so as not to ruin the joyous atmosphere, but Diedrich approaches her, and the two reminisce about their first time meeting. When she asks him how he can see hope despite being bestowed with her Divine Eyes, Diedrich reveals that he has something that the other Sword Emperors do not, something which clouds her Eyes and gives him hope. Afterward, she thanks him for being the last king she will make a pact with, as the future with him is the salvation she has been waiting for.

The next morning, Naphta holds the prophecy trial to see if the Demon King is capable of overturning Agatha's doomsday prophecy. Lay and Misa are chosen to compete against Nate and Sylvia in Naphta's Restricted World, which would simulate the one in a hundred thousand chance of success. Although Anos' friends win, their victory is something that Naphta could foresee instead of an impossible future that they made a reality.

Naphta then prophesizes that in a minute, the Phantom Knights will attack the underground jail to rescue Ahid. As a result, Diedrich, Naphta, and the Knights of Agatha set out to intercept them. They chase the enemy to Gadeciola, where they reunite with Anos' party and Golroana. Diedrich gives the prophecy that when the three kings gather in the Overlord Castle, the first proxy of god will reveal themselves. This figure turns out to be Arcana, who is attacked by the Supreme Dragon hiding inside of Ahid because she possesses part of the Order of Balance. When Arcana decides to kill Ahid, Naphta tries to stop her, as the Royal Dragon needs one more sacrifice for the birth of a new dragonborn. However, Diedrich stops her since she can't beat Anos.

Since Arcana's portion of the Order of Balance was consumed by the Supreme Dragon during the altercation, the underground dome becomes more unstable, and Naphta prophesizes that the future has taken its first step toward the end of the world. Diedrich comes to accept the bleakness of the future and that maybe he was wrong to hope. He returns to his original plan of sacrificing himself to become a pillar, together with the other dragonborn of Agatha. He then apologizes for letting her down, but Naphta reveals that this is the best future she could see and that she didn't tell anyone to avoid changing this future. Because Agatha needs Diedrich, Naphta intends to become a Sky Pillar Sword in his place. After using Kandaquizorte to materialize her restricted future in the real world, Naphta gives her final prophecy, stating that when the Knights of Agatha cross the gates of the Overlord Castle, they will transform into swords to support the underground world for eternity. However, the warriors never make it past, as they were stopped by Lay Grandsley.

Meanwhile, Naphta attempts to become a sword herself, but Anos stops her with his Mauve Magic Eyes. While Diedrich and Anos fight, Naphta swiftly beheads Anos and restricts the future so he doesn't spill the Demon King's blood. To their surprise, Anos is able to control his head and body separately, making it a two-on-two fight. Anos eventually reattaches his head, as Diedrich uses Azept to become one with Naphta. To wield Leviangilma without dying, Anos materializes the possibility of him drawing the sword instead, but Naphta restricts the possibility of it being drawn. Diedrich then uses all his strength for a feint attack, allowing Kandaquizorte to pierce Anos from behind. Because Anos is always holding himself back to protect the world, Diedrich targeted his source to make it go berserk, forcing Anos to contain its destructive power inside himself.

Diedrich then goes for the final blow, so Anos materializes the possibility of him drawing Leviangilma again. Naphta restricts the future to make the sword of possibility stay sheathed, but this is what Anos wanted, as he unsheathes the actual Leviangilma to slash Diedrich/Naptha's Divine Eyes. Since she can't see the future anymore, the future stops being restricted, and the Demon King's blood flows again, corroding the spear embedded in Anos' source. When Diedrich asks why he couldn't foresee this move, Anos explains that due to losing her Divine Eyes, this future wasn't visible to Naphta's past self.

Because they wasted time fighting, the underground dome finally collapses, forcing Anos to use his strength to hold it up. Eventually, he convinces the people of the underground to stop fighting and put aside their differences to protect their homeland. As a result, the people's emotions fly to the sky to support the dome. Arcana heals Naphta's Eyes so she can restrict the future to make Golroana's Book of Traces successful, which would revert the Moon of Creation to its original form. Due to everyone's combined efforts, the newly restored Moon of Creation turns their emotions into an actual Sky Pillar Sword, thereby averting doomsday.

A month later, Diedrich and Naphta visit Dilhade at Anos' invitation. Since her Divine Eyes haven't healed completely, Anos calls Arcana to treat her. When this is unsuccessful, he surmises that the wounds aren't in her Eyes, but Naphta already knows the reason. Because she lost sight of the future, it means the future is constantly changing, so all fixed futures have disappeared and only hope remains. That night, Naphta asks Diedrich the same question from before, asking how he was able to remain hopeful, so Diedrich reveals that he became captivated with her since she first opened her Divine Eyes. Of the countless futures of death and despair he saw, he could only see Naphta in them. Diedrich then confesses his love for her, which is reciprocated by Naphta, who attributes this as the reason why her Eyes are clouded. When he asks her to become Agatha's queen, Naphta requests a pledge. As the Goddess of the Future, she can't recall the past, so she wishes to exchange one of her Divine Eyes with one of Diedrich's physical eyes, which would allow her to keep her memories. After exchanging eyes and forming an unbreakable oath, the two kiss beneath the starry night sky.

Abilities[]

  • Immense Magic Power: As a god, she possesses immense magic power, having a near bottomless magic pool that can only be used up when doing something of extraordinary magnitude.
  • Conceptual Existence: Gods maintain and embody the order and laws of the world.[3]
  • Kandaquizorte, the Future World Crystal: The power of the Goddess of the Future in the form of a crystal ball, but it can take other forms as well, such as a spear, a sword, or a dragon. Because Kandaquizorte is the future itself, it can become intangible at will, and this blessing can even be passed on to Naphta. Even if the Future World Crystal is destroyed, it will reform itself unless all possible futures are destroyed.[4]
    • Restriction of the Future: Described as the countless futures of the world, Kandaquizorte has the ability to restrict the future to a specific outcome and make it a reality. Attacks that should've landed miss because of all the countless futures, at least one of them encompasses the possibility of failing.[4] This allows her to counter the Veneziara spell, as she can control which possibilities it brings to life.[5]
    • Restricted World: The Restricted World is the divine domain of Naphta. It is a world made entirely of crystals, creating the worst possible futures for whoever she traps inside.[4]
    • Sublime World: The ability to project the Restricted World in the real world. Kandaquizorte breaks off into pieces to cover a given area and attach themselves to whoever Naphta wishes to empower. If there is even one future where they won't be burned, the flames will not reach them. If there is even one future where they can cut, their blade will be unavoidable. If there is even a single chance of victory, they will not lose.[6]
