— Grysilis to Eleonore in "Spirited Away" |
Grysilis Derro (ギリシリス・デッロ Girishirisu Derro?) is one of the Four Evil Kings, known as the Scarlet Stele King (緋碑王 Hi-hi-ō?).
Appearance[]
Grysilis wears luxurious robes and a large hat. His face is completely smooth and featureless, while his body is made of a gel-like substance. It was impossible to tell he was a man from his appearance alone.[2]
Personality[]
Grysilis takes great pride in his magic research and thinks highly of his prowess in magic. He goes to great lengths to research magic and is willing to sacrifice people and use them as guinea pigs in the name of research. He believes that everyone will die someday, so their death should contribute to the advancement of magic. In combat, he is the type of person to lure an opponent into a trap and cast the first spell rather than challenge them directly.
History[]
During the Mythical Age, Grysilis became prominent as one of the Four Evil Kings due to his immense power. He fought for control over Dilhade and to assert himself as the ruler of the demon realm, as he battled other demons for that right. Eventually, he crossed paths with the Demon King Anos and was defeated. Grysilis became jealous because the latter possessed far more magic power than himself. Due to his source's limitation, Grysilis tried to steal Anos' source in order to increase his own power but failed.[2]
Following the Hero Kanon's plan, Anos' loyal subjects and even the powerful demons who didn't get along with him moved away from Dilhade. Grysilis and the other Evil Kings ended up at the Spirit School, where he furthered his magical research. For the past two thousand years, Grysilis studied ancient magic and carved its runes into his castle in preparation for his battle against Anos.[3]
Synopsis[]
Great Spirit Arc[]
When Anos travels to the Spirit School to find his old subordinates, he finds the Evil Kings instead. Grysilis goads him into attacking first and breaking the school's rules, but Anos doesn't fall for it, so the Evil King takes a seat and waits for class to begin. When class is over, Anos makes a bet with him. If his group passes the test and earns the right to take the spirit trial, Grysilis would have to reveal his superior's identity. The Scarlet Stele King accepts on the condition Anos wagers his source.
During the test, Grysilis tampers with the tests of Anos' subordinates and boosts Ennunien's Magic Eyes so that Anos couldn't check their tests. But unbeknownst to him, Anos summons Delsgade and uses Venuzdonoa to destroy reason, passing all of his subordinates. As promised, Grysilis reveals that his superior is the Spirit King, confirming Anos' suspicions since Grysilis was able to tamper with the tests without Ennunien's knowledge. Because everyone passed the test, they take the Spirit Trial afterward.
When Anos was approaching the Spirit King's castle, Grysilis reappears and attempts to attack him, but the Demon King destroys his body and source in retaliation. However, Grysilis is able to revive due to having seven quasi-sources. Anos tries to ignore him, but Grysilis reveals he's officially part of the Spirit Trial. They hold a spell competition, where they can only use magic from three scarlet steles. Anos uses Jirasd, but it's not a match for Grysilis' Mezoavus and he's forced to use a second one to protect himself. The Scarlet Stele King then uses his remaining two to use Regu Noavus against Anos, who uses Jirasd again. However, Anos also uses the ancient runes at the castle and turns his spell into Ji Noavus, which overwhelms Grysilis and repeatedly kills him.
Abilities[]
- Immense Magic Power: As one of the Four Evil Kings, Grysilis is considered one of the most powerful demons of the Mythical Age, as he possesses an extraordinary amount of magic power. However, because his source reached the limit of its potential to grow, his magic power is lesser in comparison to other extremely powerful Mythical Age demons such as his fellow Evil Kings and especially the Demon King Anos, which he greatly resented and tried to find a way to overcome this weakness. He was eventually able to increase his own magic power by reincarnating himself with the aid of Gigerica by having himself be reborn from a Keeper's womb, thus granting him a vast increase in magic power.
- Gelatinous Constitution: Grysilis magically altered his body to allow smoother passage of magic from his source. By circulating magic particles throughout the gel, Grysilis increases the efficiency of his magic and improves his spellcasting. His body glows with black light when preparing for combat.[2]
- Nigh-Immortality: Grysilis researched Hero Kanon's source magic and split his own source into seven quasi-sources, allowing him to use Agronemt without needing to send the spell into the future. As long as Grysilis has magic power, he can continuously resurrect himself. However, splitting his source made him weaker overall.[3]
- Spell Theory: Grysilis is noted to be an expert magic researcher, possessing great magical knowledge in regards to spell structure. However, it is stated that he isn't particularly creative, as he mostly researches techniques and spells that others have created so that he can recreate them and enhance them for his own use.
