Gennul, the Wolf of Hiding (隠狼ジェンヌル Inrō Jennuru?) is the Spirit of hiding.
Appearance[]
Gennul has the appearance of a large wolf with wings. He can also clad his body in lightning for additional protection.
History[]
Gennul was born from the legends and rumors about spiriting away others.[1] Students who fail their tests at the Spirit School are spirited away by him to take supplementary lessons.[2] By the time Anos arrived in Aharthern, Gennul had already spirited away his subordinates and those of the Scarlet Stele King, Netherworld King, and Cursed King. Under the Spirit King's orders, he also spirited away the Cursed King himself despite never failing a test.
Synopsis[]
Great Spirit Arc[]
When the students of the spirit class attempt the Spirit Trial, Gennul serves as one of the trials they must overcome before they can meet with the Spirit King. The Wolf of Hiding immediately passes Lay and Misa, but stops Anos and Aeges. Gennul challenges the two to catch him, passing the first one to do so. But unbeknownst to him, the two decide to work together to defeat him.
No matter how fast Gennul ran, Aeges' spear never left his side and eventually cuts him into two. However, his body was only an illusion, and Gennul summons hundreds of wolf-like bodies from the thunderclouds. Anos uses wind magic to disperse the clouds, but the Wolf of Hiding simply causes a fire in the Great Tree and creates bodies from the flames. When the flames are extinguished, he creates wolves from sunlight, and when that is stopped as well, Gennul makes them from the wind.
Because Rina was spirited away around that time, Anos receives an epiphany. When the sunlight wolves appeared, she reflexively closed her eyes due to the brightness. Anos hypothesizes that Gennul is a spirit that couldn't be seen because he only appears when people have their eyes closed. He closes his eyes and then uses the all-reaching spell Ygg Neas, allowing him to capture the Wolf of Hiding and pass his trial. In that tiny moment, Aeges was able to pierce into Gennul's inner dimension and leave a marker, allowing him to teleport inside later and rescue those who were spirited away.
During the raid to Delsgade, Gennul used his powers to separate Anos from the Great Spirit Avos Dilhevia, trapping him inside his inner dimension. Shin, who was waiting inside, reunited with Anos and was finally able to make amends for his disloyalty. Later, Gennul is one of the many spirits who lend Shin their power to defeat Nosgalia.
Abilities[]
- Supernatural Concealment: Gennul's wolf body is only an illusion, as his real body can't be seen. There are no records of it because he only appears before those who have their eyes closed. It's more than simple invisibility, as he doesn't exist when they have their eyes open.[3]
- Hiding: As the spirit of hiding, Gennul can make others disappear. Rumors state that those spirited away are either hidden at the world's edge or inside Gennul's body after being eaten, but he can bring them back when he needs to.[2] In truth, his body acts as some kind of magic dimension where he can hide the people he spirits away.
- Supernatural Speed: Gennul is able to move at the speed of lightning, and under normal circumstances, it's nearly impossible to catch up with him.
- Familiar Creation: Because he is inexistent most of the time, Gennul can create hundreds of wolves from the elements to serve as his proxies. He has created wolves from lightning, fire, sunlight, and wind.
Relationships[]
Spirit King[]
The Hidden Wolf is the Spirit King's watchdog. If he gives the order, then Gennul will return those he spirited away.[2] Gennul bonded with Shin during his time in Aharthern, as they played together, and would continue serving him after he became the Spirit King.
