Aria (アリア Aria?) was the Saintess of the Holy City Karnstein two thousand years ago.[1]

Appearance[]

Aria was a young woman with long snow-white hair and equally fair skin. She wore the robe of a saintess.[1]

Personality[]

Aria was sympathetic towards demons because of Camus, believing that not all of them were hostile against humans. She hated the fact that she was forced to fight against them and wanted to escape her responsibilities as a saintess.[1]

History[]

Aria was born in the rural town of Lauhan, far away from the embers of war. As a child, she spent her days admiring flowers, and the forest near the city was like her personal garden. One day, she became so captivated by a rare flower that she didn't realize it was dark already. She got lost while running back home, and a giant snake attacked her. However, she awakened her abilities as a saintess for the first time, and the holy magic within her blocked the fangs of the man-eating snake. The creature tried again, but Aria was saved by a boy around her age, Camus. She visited him every day after that, even after learning he was a demon, and the two became close friends. Camus taught her many things about the forest, such as the plants and the animals, and the two eventually fell in love.[2]

When Aria turned ten, she informed Camus that she was chosen as a saintess and would move to the Holy City Karnstein, where no demon could enter, so they would never meet again. However, Camus knew this day would come and gave her a Michens Necklace, telling her to wait for him, as he would become strong enough to take her back. Camus eventually returned to Dilhade, where he trained for the next ten years, becoming one of Demon King Anos' most valuable subordinates and a commander who led his troops.[2]

Ten years later, Hero Kanon went to Karnstein to recruit Aria for the Demon King Subjugation Battalion, as her barrier magic surpassed that of the other saintesses. They needed to defeat the Demon King before he could unify all the demons and attack them at full power. However, she declined, as she didn't want to be a tool for killing demons anymore. She never wanted to be Saintess in the first place. It was soldiers of the Subjugation Battalion who kidnapped little girls and locked them up in Prayer Towers, where they would continue raising barriers to protect their cities until the day they died. Kanon sympathized with Aria's feelings, as he felt the same, and promised to help her become an ordinary girl again. As a result, she began to see him in a positive light and told him about her past.[1]

Because they had fought on the battlefield before, Kanon recognized Camus and told Aria about him, who was relieved he was alive. She agreed to help Kanon and told him that she was going to cast De Rianes and seal it in her Magic Sealing Ring, which would allow him to use her barrier at any time. However, Kanon opposed her plan since De Rianes turned the caster's source into an eternal barrier, making reincarnation impossible. The reason she wanted to die was that Camus was surely going to keep his promise, even if he was going towards certain death, as he could no longer attack humans due to signing Kanon's Zecht and Karnstein was one of humanity's most secure strongholds. She felt like Camus had already sacrificed enough for her, as he dedicated ten years of his life to get stronger in order to save her. Aria wanted Kanon to tell Camus that she didn't want to see him anymore and that she no longer loved him.

Unexpectedly, Demon King Anos openly attacked Karnstein and drew the humans away, allowing Camus to sneak into the Prayer Tower to meet with Aria. This was the first time Anos encountered Kanon, who was angry due to believing that Anos had killed Camus. During their fierce battle, the light of De Rianes suddenly appeared and disappeared. After defeating Kanon, Anos went up the tower and found the bodies of the couple holding hands and smiling.[3] The human sages also found their bodies, but they were disgusted by Aria's betrayal and tried to chop Camus' hand. However, Anos brought down the tower and retrieved their bodies. Upon seeing them, Kanon briefly prayed for them and listened to Anos' request. As a result, he buried the couple in their hometown of Lauhan and put their Michens Necklace in a shrine, as customary, near Karnstein.[4]

It was believed that Aria willingly gave her source to activate De Rianes while Camus followed her into the afterlife. But in reality, the couple chose to reincarnate, believing that the Demon King and Hero would set aside their differences and finally bring peace to the world. When this became a reality, the two retrieved their Michens Necklace and had children in the new era. Their necklace became an heirloom and was passed down to their descendants, eventually reaching the hands of Izabella and the reborn Anos, who was glad their love story had a satisfying conclusion.[4]

Abilities[]

  • Master Barrier Magic User: Aria had the best barrier magic among the saintesses, which made her desirable for the Demon King Subjugation Battalion. [1] Her barriers were strong enough to keep large armies of demons away, allowing the city of Karnstein to prosper.[3]

Relationships[]

Camus Anfas[]

Aria was Camus' childhood friend and soulmate, but their love was forbidden as their countries were at war. When Aria was forced to become a saintess, Camus promised her that he would become strong enough to take her away and that she should wait for that day. He was determined to keep his promise, even if he would likely die invading Karnstein alone while being unable to harm any humans. She wanted to sacrifice herself for him, as Camus had already sacrificed too much for her and would give his life as well.[2]

Hero Kanon[]

At first, Aria only thought of him as a great warrior that everyone revered. However, because Kanon understood her feelings and didn't force her to go to the battlefield, she became convinced that he could end the war peacefully. She trusted him enough to tell him about her past with Camus, a demon.[1]
